Hyprland vs. Sway: The Wayland Showdown
If you are moving away from X11, you are likely looking at these two powerhouses. Both are Tiling Window Managers (TWMs) built for Wayland, but they offer very different philosophies for your desktop experience.
1. Hyprland: The Modern Aesthetic
Hyprland is the “new kid” that took the Linux community by storm. It focuses heavily on being a dynamic tiling manager with built-in flair.
- Design Philosophy: Eye-candy out of the box. It uses a “Dwindle” layout by default (similar to BSPWM).
- Key Features:
- Animations: Silky smooth window transitions and fades.
- Rounded Corners & Blur: Built-in support for dual-kawase blur and rounded edges.
- Customization: Uses a unique
.confsyntax that is very easy to read.
- Best For: Users who want a futuristic, highly polished desktop without needing dozens of external scripts.
2. Sway: The Stable Workhorse
Sway is the veteran of the Wayland world. It was built as a 1:1 drop-in replacement for the legendary i3wm.
- Design Philosophy: Total stability and “i3-compatibility.” It is a manual tiling manager.
- Key Features:
- i3 Migration: If you have an
i3config, it will likely work in Sway with zero changes. - Minimalism: Very low resource usage. It doesn’t include “bloat” like animations by default.
- Rock Solid: Built strictly on the
wlrootslibrary, making it the gold standard for Wayland stability.
- i3 Migration: If you have an
- Best For: Productivity purists, minimalists, and those who want a reliable tool that never breaks.
